My foundation routine to cover my acne using Vichy’s Dermablend

Acne can really get you down. From the texture on your skin that’s ever present, to the angry red bumps and painful spots that are unrelenting.

I’ve suffered with acne for over five years, and while short term solutions have cleared my skin up to no end, there’s one recurring certainty – my acne will come back with a vengeance. I often get complimented on my skin, but what people don’t realise is just how red and angry it is underneath my makeup, and for that, I’m pretty thankful. In the comparison pictures below, my skin was at its worst, it has cleared a fair bit since these images but I still have a lot of issues with acne around my jaw line which I can thankfully cover up for the most part.

After being referred to a dermatologist and being told that I couldn’t take my last option of Accutane (Roacctane) due to having a nut allergy, I was completely devastated and even more stressed than usual. Anybody who suffers with acne or breakouts will know that stress makes skin much worse.

For years I’ve used MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid as my foundation of choice, but as my acne has gotten worse and the scarring and redness more prominent, it just isn’t working out for me anymore. I quickly turned to an old favourite that’s widely loved by people who need to cover up acne, scarring and even tattoos. Cue Vichy’s Dermablend!

Dermablend has been around for absolute years and is a high coverage, long hold foundation with SPF35. It’s a smooth and lightweight formula that blends into the skin effortlessly masking imperfections without looking cakey, dry or like a mask.

I picked up the colour Porcelain 05 which is the lightest shade in the range (I’m NC15 in MAC Studio Fix) and suits my skin tone quite well. It is a little dark for me but it’s nothing that a little blending out can’t deal with.

I firstly cleanse my skin with Liz Earle’s Cleanse and Polish followed by the Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic. I then moisturise my skin with my La Roche Posay Toleriane Soothing Protective Skincare cream. To apply Dermablend, I either take a little onto my fingers and lightly massage it into my skin building coverage where I need it, or use a dampened beauty blender to bop the product into my skin. I find that smoothing the foundation in with my fingers or using a beauty blender works much better than using a buffing brush – sometimes my skin can be a little dry so this works out much better for me personally.

I then go ahead and set my foundation with my Ben Nye Neutral setting powder in translucent.

I usually use a concealer in my foundation routine, but honestly, this foundation is such high coverage – 25% pigmentation concentration to be exact – that a concealer definitely isn’t needed. The foundation instantly covers up my imperfections, masks the redness of my skin and gives me a much smoother, even skin appearance without feeling heavy what so ever.

I can comfortably wear the foundation for around 8-10 hours with a little retouching, which is great news if I have a busy day at work and can’t spend time re-applying. This is an amazing foundation with a brilliant price to match for just how well it covers and wears throughout the day.
