Fake tan is a wonderful thing, it allows us to look beautifully bronzed without damaging our skin with the harmful UV rays of the sun. But sometimes, our tan might come out a little darker than we expected and leave us in a bit of a panic.
Fear not though, because I have a few helpful tips that will help to fade your tan to a lighter shade without the stress!
1. Take an oily bath
Oils help to soften the skin, and in turn help us to be able to slough away the top layer which helps to tone down the tan. My favourite way to do this is to either pour some bath oil (or olive oil!) into a warm bath before soaking for 15 minutes, or applying coconut oil liberally to my body and leaving it to soak in for 15 minutes before jumping in the tub and soaking for a further ten minutes. After I’ve been suitably soaked, I take a loofah or an exfoliating sponge and simply gently exfoliate my skin. Don’t forget to moisturise once you get out if you try this method to keep your skin supple, soft and nourished. Also, be very careful when using bath oils as they do tend to make the bath very slippery.
2. Use baking soda
Baking soda is an excellent exfoliator that won’t leave your skin sore (patch test first!), is cheap to buy and is non-abrasive. Run a warm bath and add half a cup full of baking soda to the water. Hop in and soak for 15-20 minutes before gently exfoliating the skin with a loofah or exfoliating sponge.
3. Reach for the lemons!
Lemon juice has long been used as a kind-to-skin bleaching agent to remove dark pigmentation and brighten. Make your own lemon exfoliator with a cup of sugar and 3/4 cup of lemon juice before applying it to the skin in the bath or shower. Repeat the process but make sure to be gentle with your skin. Moisturise afterwards for soft, glowing skin.
There you have it, three tips to toning down your fake tan in less than 30 minutes! Now you can walk out the door feeling like a confident golden goddess just in time for those summery BBQ’s.
