My Accutane Journey | Month 4: Upping the dose and new side effects

Hello my loves and welcome to my Month 4 Accutane update! In some ways it only seems like two minutes since I started my Accutane treatment. For the most part, it’s been real plain sailing for me as far as the side effects are concerned which really surprised me.

I’m an extremely sensitive person as a rule – my body tends to react to things quickly and I can’t do a lot of what my friends do without feeling extremely poorly. Drinking alcohol for example: my friends could drink the night away and wake up the next morning feeling a little ropey but otherwise okay. For me, drinking only a few glasses of alcohol can leave me with extreme sickness, a pounding headache and extremely sore skin and muscles the next day. I also find that I get run down very quickly and don’t seem to have had the most efficient immune system in the past. With that being said, I expected my Accutane journey to be hella rough and full of every side effect listed. Thankfully, this hasn’t been the case so far and even the adjustment period when I first started taking the drug was very bearable.

Today (I’m writing this on Tuesday) I visited the hospital for my 4 monthly Accutane check up. After taking my pregnancy test and having a chat with the nurse, the doctor decided that it would be a good idea to up my dose to 60mg per day instead of 40mg per day.

I’m a little anxious to up my dose as I’ve just started experiencing really niggling lower back ache with my treatment. For the last few weeks I was waking up with horrendous pain in my back. At first, I blamed my mattress but it soon dawned on me that it could be my medication. Paracetamol and Ibuprofen rarely touch it and I’ve taken to wearing a back support at times to relieve the pain. Although it is quite frustrating and irritating, it’s in no way unbearable so I’m going to persevere but I always have the option to lower my dose again if I feel like I can’t cope.

The most incredible thing about my journey so far has been the change in my skin. It’s so much clearer than it’s ever been in a long time. In fact that’s putting it lightly. My skin is the best it has ever been and I have zero active breakouts at the moment on my face and neck which is just amazing to me after struggling with my skin for so long.

As always, I’ve vlogged my month 4 experience so if you’d like to take a closer look, have a watch of the video below. Don’t forget to thumbs up the video if you enjoy it, and also subscribe to my channel – t’s completely free to do so and you won’t miss any further updates.
