NYX cosmetics burst into the UK and hit the shelves of our local Boots stores to a frenzy of pre-made fans. After seeing our American beauty youtubers rave about it in the past (their Jumbo Pencil in Milk seemed to grace every makeup video), we just couldn’t wait to get our hands on it!
I was definitely looking forward to trying out the range, but it wasn’t until one of my makeup students brought in the NYX Gel Liner and Smudger that I got really excited and thought I’d really like to try it out. So today, I’m going to bring you a NYX Gel Liner and Smudger review!
I hotfooted it to Boots in our local town as soon as I could grab a little time and was gutted to see most things were already sold out! Luckily, I’m pretty persistent so I rocked up to Meadowhall instead and came away with a little pot of the liner in the colour Betty which is Jet Black. The liner comes in a small pot and is £7.50 which I think is more than reasonable. The first thing I noticed was just how solid the packaging was – it took me a good five minutes to get into the box, then get the pot out of the box and then lastly, get past the plastic peel off sheet inside the pot to get to the liner. Phew!
The liner has quick a thick consistency that reminds me a lot of the Maybelline Gel Liner. It is really easy to smudge out and feels quite thick and heavy when applying to the lid but doesn’t set heavily at all. If you’ve ever used the Maybelline gel liner, you’ll know how great it is to smudge out, but how terrible it is for drying out, skipping across the lid and generally, how hard it is to work with. I would say that the NYX Gel Liner and Smudger is great for beginners as it’s easy to smudge out and create a smokey effect if you do go wrong, but if you want a precise wing, it does take a little getting used to as the consistency is so thick. The second thing I noticed was just how strong this little liner is – when it came to removing the excess from the back of my hand where I’d applied the product to my brush, it took a heck of a lot of micellar water and gentle rubbing to get it off. It filled me with high hopes of is lasting on my lids all day long!
Although the liner did last well along the centre and outer corners of my eyelids, I did notice that it had transferred and smudged onto my lower lash line and inner lower corner throughout the day which I was really disappointed with as it made my makeup look sloppy and also made me look pretty worn out. Although my eyes had been quite a nightmare with hayefever over the days I’d tested the liner on, I’ve never found my MAC Blacktrack liner to smudge like that in the past.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with this gel liner and will continue to use it myself and on my gorgeous clients when I need to smudge a look out or create a quick smokey eye. It’s great value for money, the packaging is excellent and it’s beginner friendly.
